Notoriously private business man, and founder of Primark Stores Ltd, Arthur Ryan was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award for his contributions to Retail in a ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
His friend Sir Philip Green, owner of Arcadia, presenting the award via a video, said: “This is a man who richly deserves this award. He’s tirelessly developed and built one of the UK’s great businesses.”
Primark also won Oracle Retailer of the Year.
The low cost, high volume business model has changed retailing (and the High Street) forever. Sales from 196 Primark and Penneys stores across Ireland, the UK and Spain now top £2bn.
Yet despite working in the ego driven world of retailing, Ryan has remained firmly in the background tirelessly building – in the words of Sir Philip Green – one of the UK's great businesses.
