LONDON BABY!

On Monday 27th we all took a trip up to London to do some Fabric Sourcing!
Zoe, Amelia, Sam, Tanya and I headed down to Goldhawk Road to get some samples of some heavier fabrics.
At first I was a bit annoyed that the first shop I went in refused to give us any samples. This became a problem as we realised that most heavier fabrics, like wool and leather, were expensive. Some shopkeepers were reluctant to sell us less than 1/2 a metre!
But once we did a bit of roleplaying and smiled ever so sweetly, we got some really nice samples!
We found it was effective to search for the fabrics ourselves, show an interest in its composition and not baffle them by all crowding around (like typical students!)
Oh, and we proundly got some shopping in too!! HAHA!

Pattern Cutting POWERRR!

Just had two days of pattern cutting with Patricia and Jodie and let me tell you, it is alot harder than I thought!
I have only had experience cutting and very slightly altering vogue patterns etc. so I knew this was going to be hard.
I learnt alot from pattern cutting actually. It takes a lot of patience. It also found it helped me to make notes while Patricia was demonstrating, which I think I need to work on. Hopefully soon I'll be able to just whizz off after the demo and produce a completely accurate and awesome pattern!
I also learnt how effective the Pattern Master is and how to use it.
I felt a bit silly asking Patricia and Jodie for help for what seems like every 5 seconds! I know I need to work on this. I need to trust my own inital instincts.
It's very reassuring having Pat and Jodie there though, they are very lovely people.

Folkin' Hell!

Well, the next project sounds brilliant!

We have been given the task to think about Folk costume. We need to sketch and design ideas for a shirt based on Eastern Euopean cultural fashions.
I think it's going to be fun to interpret these folk inspirations in our own ways. It's going to be really exciting looking into the different costume from various cultures.
I must say that I am very impressed by the library. I spent the entire day in there researching using Russian and Hungarian books, and books about Folklore costume. I found myself wrapped up in there!
Also, I think I've already chosen to focus on Russian Folk costume as I visited Russia in March 08. I got to see magnificent architecture from St. Petersburg and Moscow and I even saw a Folklore Show with authentic costume and music and everything. I'm going to try and use as much research from the Russia trip as I can.
EEEEEE this is going to be gooood.

Construction Envy :(

Grrrr!

We had another session of construction today and I am really pushing myself work efficiently.
Although I have done lots and lots of machine work at Corfe Hills, I still am struggling to keep my work accurate at such a fast pace! At times I was a few stages behing Jane and Caroline.
But...I am prepared that this is a part of learning how things are done in industry. I hope everyone feels like this....? I am confident. I beleieve I can do it well. Its still early days I guess right??

Dalton out!

Images of my Organic Ruffle Project.

I decided to organise image on to my themeboard of various elements of nature. I then decided to experiment further with the theme of 'Waterfalls'.

Here are images of my final outcomes.

Get in there, ruffle some fabric...

Project 2 was a 'Ruffle and Fold' Project. It was spread over two days, in which we had to put together a themeboard, compile a sketchbook and make a visual representation of our ruffle etc. on the stands.

>> At first I was thinking....OHMYGOD. I have never worked with natural forms before (the main theme of the project). I had no idea how to approach it. I always thought they were dull and ridiculous really.

But by experimenting on the stands, I found it easier to follow the brief and not go off into a wierd direction....

But even though this helped, I was lead to think this was the wrong way of working.
I wil bear this project in mind when I sruggle in the future, but I will definately spend more time on my sketchbook and themeboard work.

I was fairly proud with the result in a way...meh...

Sugar and Spice......and Spray Mount...

Hello bloggers!

Monday again and I had lots of fun putting together the themeboard!
I've always enjoyed stuff like that and I felt that I did the job well.
If you're completely bewildered by the title, I chose to do my theme based on Spice......yeah ok it was the 'easiest' one, but needless to say it wasn't a challenege!
That annoys me actually. I guess it is the most obvious theme......I don't know.

I was so embarrassed speaking aloud. It's something I need to work on I think. I need to realise it's not such a daunting task, but I get all nervous. Honestly, I feel it is a major downfall not being as bold as others in class.

However, my ridiculously ulta organisational preps paid off! I always plan everything, especially my work. Maybe I need to be a bit more spontaneous? A bit more scrappy??
Just the thought of that idea makes me feel uneasy. I felt like I needed to bring every bit of crafty thing I could. I am such nerd sometimes......plan plan plan aaahhh.

Big girl sewing session!

Whooah! Been using the industrial machines today wehey!!

I felt fairly uneasy at first today as I wasn't sure if the knowledge that I had from sixth form would help me at the Arts Institute, machining-wise, but it went really well. I had done most of the seam practices before but it's a totally different ball game on these chunky machines! Pressing is brillliant.
Honestly i can't wait to use this amazing equipment on my own garments etc.
Seem to be getting used to the jam-packed, information-filled days now.
Sarah and Patricia brought out the dreaded ballet box out today :S
Not really feeling very confident to be honest but leading the group would be really great. I've never done anything like this before and I reckon that I would really enjoy it. Eeeek it's all very serious isn't it??!!
Off to work on the moodboard before I go out.
Dalton, out!
